Financial Fraud Targeting Monterey County Seniors
Financial elder abuse is growing concern in Monterey County. In the past year, Adult Protective Services received 1,193 reports of financial fraud or abuse.Common scams and abuse include:Government imposters who trick seniors into losing savings, property, or a homeHigh-pressure home improvement deals that leave seniors with contracts over $30,000Financial exploitation by family members, caregivers, or other trusted people
Legal Services for Seniors offers legal help and advocacy for victims. Our attorneys and advocates can help recover property, cancel unfair contracts, and report abuse—although some complex scams may be difficult or impossible to fully recover from.Since June 2025, LSS has partnered with Monterey County Adult Protective Services to run in-person workshops countywide to teach seniors how to spot scams, know their rights, and avoid abuse.If you suspect financial abuse, contact Legal Services for Seniors for help.
