Financial Fraud Targeting Monterey County Seniors
Over the last year there were 1,193 reports of Financial Fraud/Abuse made to Monterey Co. Adult Protection Services.
Monterey County seniors have been victims of a variety of scams targeting seniors such as:
Government imposter schemes resulting in the loss of their homes or retirement savings
High pressure home improvement sales leading contracts obligating them to $30, 000+
Lost property to unscrupulous family members and caregivers
Legal Services for Seniors provides legal guidance to Monterey County seniors who have been victims of scams. Unfortunately, some of these sophisticated scams result in unrecoverable losses. Our Attorneys and Legal advocates have had success recovering property, cancelling unscrupulous contracts, and reporting the scam to the appropriate authority.
Understanding Financial Elder Abuse the best way to eliminate this type of abuse. Since June 2025, LSS and Monterey County Adult Protective Services have conducted in-person workshops for seniors throughout the county, educating seniors about scams targeting seniors and how to avoid becoming a victim.
